SALMO, B.C. — April 15, 2026

A quiet spring evening in the small village of Salmo was shattered late Tuesday night when a fast-moving fire tore through a three-unit residential building, leaving multiple families displaced and the community searching for answers.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Fourth Street just after 11:40 p.m., where flames were already visible through the roof of the aging triplex.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as residents scrambled to escape. One tenant, who asked not to be identified, said she awoke to the smell of smoke and the sound of cracking wood.

“I opened my door and the hallway was already filling with smoke,” she said. “We just grabbed what we could and ran.”

Despite the intensity of the fire, no serious injuries were reported. Two residents were treated on scene for smoke inhalation, while another was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though officials have not ruled out electrical issues, citing the building’s age. Investigators from the regional fire service are expected to remain on site throughout the week.

By early Wednesday morning, little remained of the structure beyond a charred frame and smoldering debris. Power to the surrounding area was temporarily shut off as a precaution, affecting several nearby homes.

In the wake of the disaster, the tight-knit Salmo community has quickly mobilized. Local organizations and volunteers have begun collecting clothing, food, and essential supplies for the displaced families. A temporary reception center has been set up at the Salmo Community Hall.

“This is a tough moment for our community, but it’s also a reminder of how we come together when it matters most,” she said. “We’re focused now on making sure those affected have the support they need.”

As investigators work to determine what sparked the blaze, residents are left grappling with the loss — but also leaning on one another in true small-town fashion.

Anyone wishing to support the affected families is encouraged to contact the Village of Salmo or local relief organizers.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
